Water is the most effective extinguishing agent against fires in solid combustibles such as wood, paper and cloth. These fires can remain hidden deep within objects and continue to rise in temperature until surrounding materials ignite. Water instantly brings down the temperature of the fire and the area around it, helping prevent re-ignition.
